Do You Know This Hawk, I Mean Personally?

I'm off to odious tasks of the day....but I've meant to ask.
This hawk is sitting on my back wall and in nearby trees trying to catch a kitten. Or at least I think trying to catch one. Do you know what it is?

I can't find a photo to match.

  1. Sarah, you've got a Cooper's hawk. They feed primarily on small birds and occasionally small mammals. I'd keep your kitties close while this bird is around. - Mark

  2. Mark,
Would a 18 pound cat be food?

One of my cats disappeared two days ago. I have three, The Pandas and their Mom, Kalifornia who is gone. My three kittens I put inside they are ready for homes but I can't give them. Late kittens. Her first litter died of some syndrome. I had everyone fixed now though. I'm kind of torn, because I know this bird is on my wall and that's way to close to people. And i try to keep the kitties in and they are so darn stubborn about the outside. I'm such a cat lover-it's hard.

There are lots of small birds especially in those trees they butchered. I hate to think of what this hawk is up there doing. When I look at how they were topped it's kind of painful in another way.

Thank you for telling me the kind. I've looked up hawks several days.
    It's usually Red Hawks here.

  3. Yeah Sarah, it's hard to think about and then watch, those raptors surviving at the expense of weaker species. But it's part of our balance, I figure.

We have 2 cats, keep 'em extra well fed, and don't worry they'll be carried off by a big bird (I don't think that happened to your 18 pounder). We have Cooper's hawks here too. Now an eagle, I'd worry about that - but they'd never venture down to the ground in our neighborhood.

I'm real sorry about your cat loss, I hope she returns. My heart was broken a couple months ago too with a loss... Be careful with those little ones - Mark
