When in the course...

 Happy 4th of July.

I came upon a kid friendly Declaration of Independence.
It amuses me greatly to think of a kid-o-pedia.
One of the activities we've done in meetings around education and under-performance is sit to re-write the Standards in Kid friendly language so it struck me as very entertaining to find the Declaration of Independence broken down for that important purpose.
I doubt we are all up to it, but I listened to a very interesting and challenging program on Bill Moyer's.
It talked about this Declaration Of Independence.

Then Moyer's interviewed a fascinating man.
Asking the interviewee over and over how he "felt" on the 4th.

This was an extremely challenging and difficult interview. One I found engaged me intellectually.

So I was struck when Moyers asked us to read the Declaration.

Probably the least we can do on the 4th of July.

I loved reading this article about Jefferson changing "subjects" to "citizens" in the text. I think that is so critical.

And this, is just wonderful.

Or this:

Despite making this page, I'm still learning by listening to Our Declaration on this day.

  1. Thanks for the link to the Kidipede site; some Social Studies materials needs are covered for me there.

And merry 4th of July to you! Any happy birthday a few days late, as well. I turned 59 on June 30. We're not getting older; but there do seem to be a lot more young people than there used to be. :)

I've tried a few times over the last few months to leave comments here on your blog, and for whatever reason they do not survive the moderation process. I think I may have figured out a way around the problem now, though. So here goes another try.

Got a new blog now, since my regular one got hacked the other day, and I've put it to rest. It is all cleaned up, but I am trying something to see if it helps me write more.

  2. How do you know when something you've poured bucket-loads of creative energy into is complete? It's a question that's been dogging me for months.

I'm very aware right now that I am in a transitional moment of my life, and I have a sense that others may be as well, more so than other times, perhaps. I don't really know. So I'm taking this opportunity to try something a little bit different. Education/teaching will no doubt be a part of it, but not the only part. And maybe not even the main part. So yes, I want to explore other topics, and I think that a fresh canvas might be helpful.

I figured there was probably something extra-stressful going on with you, but glad to see that you seem to be weathering it gracefully - at least that's how it looks from here. I've enjoyed that last several things you've posted. Happy to know that you are still carrying it forward.

  5. Thank you.
I call it the Oh My God it's summer and I'm losing my eyesight and can't think of what to blog while my husband is changing jobs and I'm having way too much time with my mom posting. Always a terrific backstory to these pieces.
I watched that Bill Moyers thing and got caught up in it.
